There are many conditions that affect the shoulders, arms and wrists, either in isolation (one area alone) or in a combination.

Frequently, pain that starts in the shoulder can ‘travel’ all the way to the hands and fingers. Sharp stabbing pains, dull aches, and tingling can all be experienced. Decreased mobility or range of motion, and pain caused by movement makes life difficult, and can impact social, family and work life. Shoulder, arm, wrist and hand pain is nothing to laugh about, and needs to be attended to.

Getting on your nerves

Information is supplied to the shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and fingers by the brachial plexus, a nerve network that originates in the spinal column. If there is any misalignment, the nerves can be irritated, or pinched, and this can decrease the range of motion, and result in pain anywhere along the path to the fingers. Sleeping awkwardly, sitting in less than an ideal posture, or for too long, is enough to create a problem. Sports injuries, work accidents, and leisure activities too can put pressure on sensitive neural pathways. Undiagnosed and uncorrected, many people who suffer ongoing pain in shoulders, arms or wrists resort to painkillers, do less due to decreased mobility, or even accept surgery in an effort to fix the problem. Bowen therapy is a modality that has a great track record in resolving many of these problems, sometimes amazingly quickly.

A pain in the neck

Common symptoms of problems in the shoulders, arms or wrists are muscle weakness or numbness, neck pain or neck stiffness. Sometimes this is worse in the morning after sleeping, and we may put it down to the position we slept in. There are a myriad of things that can wrong, and sometimes the pain will manifest a long way from the origin of the problem, making it a mystery why something is hurting, and leading to a misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment. Because every part of our body is in fact connected to every other part of our body, stress can affect parts other than the actual site of damage. Pain in the hands can be caused by misalignment in the neck. Pain in the neck or shoulders can be caused by nerve compression in the back, or by even a mild incident of whiplash, etc.

Bowen therapy can gently realign the body systems, and restore proper function.
